Meridel Rubenstein (born ) is an American photographer and installation artist based out of New Mexico.
She is known for her large-format photographs incorporating sculptures and unique media.
Bio - Meridel Rubenstein: Meridel Rubenstein began her professional career in the early s, evolving from photographer of free photographic images to artist of extended photographic works, multi-media installations, and environmental social practice. Her focus has been on intersections of nature and culture in relationship to ecological and social imbalance.Biography
Rubenstein was born in Detroit, Michigan in In , Rubenstein earned a bachelor's degree in social science, with a film-making emphasis from Sarah Lawrence College. She received an M.A.
from the University of Recent Mexico in and an M.F.A. from the same institution in , studying with Beaumont Newhall and Franck Van Deren Coke.[1] She received a Guggenheim Fellowship in and a National Endowment for the Arts Fellowship in [2] From to she was head of the photography department at San Francisco State University.[3] In she returned to Brand-new Mexico to teach at the Institute of American Indian Arts.
In , she received a fellowship from the Pollock-Krasner Foundation.[4] She currently lives and works in Santa Fe, New Mexico and Singapore.
Small of stature and big on ideas, lively, talkative. When everything I'm thinking about at the time comes together in one story, that's when I know I possess to do it. Born in Detroit inand spending summers at the family farm in Vermont. In the late s, she worked with a left-wing, agit-prop film collective in Vermont, along with members of New York Newsreel.Rubenstein is best established for her large-format photographs incorporating sculptures and unusual media, such as Monks in a Canoe from to in the collection of the Honolulu Museum of Art. This work consists of a dye transfer on glass and a found wooden dug-out canoe.
Her photographic series, The Volcano Cycle, is a component of the larger project, Eden Turned on its Side.[5][6]
Collections
The Honolulu Museum of Art,[7] the Museum für Kunst und Gewerbe Hamburg (Hamburg, Germany), the New Mexico Museum of Art, the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, and Smithsonian American Art Museum (Washington, DC) are among the public collections holding work by Meridel Rubenstein.[8][9]
